The best defense against laminitis is prevention and early detection!
The Maine Farriers Association is devoted to supplying Maine and New England farriers, veterinarians and equine enthusiasts with the educational resources to prevent, detect and support equines from conditions such as laminitis.
This October 17th and 18th, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Ellen Staples will be presenting to us an educational clinic focused on laminitis!
Dr. Ellen Staples is a Certified Journeyman Farrier and a graduate of the University of Florida Vetinary College. She interned at the Equine Medical Center of Ocala, where she focused on lameness diagnosis, management, and emergency medicine.
We welcome hoof care practitioners, veterinarians and all other equine enthusiasts to join us this fall! This clinic has already been approved for 16 International Association of Professional Farriers continuing education credits and 16 hours of veterinarian continuing education credits with the Maine Board of Veterinary Medicine
This clinic will be at the University of Maine; J. Franklin Witter Teaching & Research Center in Old Town, Maine.
The price to attend both days will be $150, and this includes a 2027 Maine Farriers Association Membership.

Shane came and gave us 3 awesome lectures about the biomechanics of horses as well as different approaches to shoe types and modifications for different ailments in the hind limb - like stifle and hock issues
Live Demo
Shane preformed live demos on how to evaluate a horse and their x-rays to decide how best to help them in a balanced propepr trim and then in a shoeing package if need be. Day 1 he preformed a set of clogs and day two he approached a hind end and front end lameness on an ex-broodmare who left the clinic more comfortable than she arrived

At our clinics we are fortunate enough to have on-demand x-rays of our live demo horses to see how trims and shoe packages can change the bony alignment on our projects so we can better understand our influence on our client horses
